Celebrating our founders

The Magdalene Group was born out of the vision of two Norwich magistrates, Doreen Betts & Doreen Green.

Both Doreens regularly sat in court, frequently dealing with young women who were brought before them, charged with soliciting and getting fines which meant they had to back out on the streets.

Both ladies were deeply moved by the young women they met, and understood the abuse, coercion & exploitation they experienced.

They reflected on the privilege of their own daughters of similar ages and felt compelled to do something and from this they established the charity in 1992.
