Away Day

Georgie, our Chair of Trustees, very generously hosted our Away Day yesterday. The whole staff team - together with our trustees - spent a very productive working morning, looking at our forward strategy as well as our forthcoming 30th anniversary. A delicious spread for lunch was followed by an opportunity for a relaxing & social afternoon - with much hilarity in the swimming pool and a fiendishly complicated skittles-type game on the lawn. A glass of bubbly rounded off a lovely day. Great company in a perfect setting & the intoxicating scent of sweet peas!

Sessions for professionals

Our popular occasional sessions for professionals continue online for the moment. Hosted by members of our Rose & Doorway teams, they provide not only an opportunity for us to share the work of The Magdalene Group but also for professionals from other agencies to talk about their roles and experiences, & between us we can share best practice. The next session takes place from 10 - 11 a.m. on Thursday 21st July; if you would like to attend, please contact the office on 01603 610256 to book a place, as numbers are limited.

Victims Commissioner’s third annual report

Dame Vera Baird QC has just published her Victims Commissioner's third annual report. She highlights the ever-growing court backlog for gender-based violence, continuing the wait for survivor justice. Dame Vera disagrees with the explanations for this backlog were a result of the pandemic, but instead due to a shortage of criminal barristers and part-time judges. The Report also reflected on the Draft Victims Bill which anticipates a substantial improvement for the victims of serious crime including Violence Against Women and Girls and Domestic and Sexual Abuse.

Carrie’s Outreach & HARP, Southend

Imogen, one of our Women's Specialist Practitioners, visited two projects in Southend, each supporting vulnerable women. Carrie's Outreach, who are instrumental in the safeguarding forum and other multi-agency meetings for women who sell sex in Southend, working collaboratively to ensure that women get the support in a way that is suitable to their needs. "Thank you so much for having me. I loved having a look around your service, the relationships built between staff and clients was so lovely to see. You are doing such incredible work and it was truly inspiring!" & HARP, the local charity aiming to End Rough Sleeping in Southend-on-Sea, helping local people overcome homelessness for good. "Thank you for having me! I really appreciate the insight you gave me into HARP. Your focus on clients is so evident and everyone I met was so helpful and clearly cared so much for their service users." Imogen Sagon, Doorway Women's Service
